AZUR SPACE Solar Power GmbH, based in Heilbronn, Germany is the European market leader and global player in the development and production of high performance multi junction solar cells for SPACE and terrestrial CPV applications.

AZUR SPACE has been active in the space solar cell market for 50 years now and has supplied solar cells for more than 500 satellites to date. Over the years, more than 2 million triple junction space solar cells have been delivered to customers. Not a single in orbit failure underlines AZUR SPACE’s commitment to high quality, state of the art space products.  

At present, AZUR SPACE is in the process of bringing the most modern solar cell technology from Space back to Earth. With materials and structures originally developed to supply power to telecommunications and Earth observation satellites designed for scientific research, reconnaissance or navigation missions. Today, AZUR SPACE solar cells are also demonstrating their excellent performance on the ground.

The newest generation of CPV solar cells are achieving efficiencies up to 44% under concentration of several hundreds of suns whereas space solar cells are more focused on the end of life behavior after many years reliable service in orbit.

Operating in the aerospace, defense, and security sector, Terma supports customers and partners all over the world. With more than 1,100 committed employees worldwide, we develop and manufacture mission-critical products and solutions that meet our customers’ needs and requirements. The turnover in the fiscal year 2012/13 was €153 million. Terma has space activities based at our facilities in Denmark, Germany and The Netherlands, as well as activities on customer premises in several European countries. Areas of expertise include system integration, power electronics, star trackers, flight software and ground software. We design, manufacture and test power electronics at our corporate headquarter in Lystrup, Denmark. Our recent heritage includes power conditioning- and distribution electronics for planetary missions and deep space missions including Rosetta, Mars Express, Venus Express, Bepi Colombo and Exomars. We have also supplied power electronics for Galileo IOV and Small GEO.

EnerSys-ABSL is world renowned for supplying industry leading primary and secondary lithium-ion batteries to the global space industry due to our technical excellence, flexibility, faultless in-flight performance and customer focussed approach. 

From providing the first space flight lithium-ion batteries in 2001, EnerSys-ABSL batteries have now powered over 90 space missions including the first lithium-ion powered spacecraft to Mars and Venus.

Clemessy Switzerland AG develops Electrical Ground Support Equipment and Ground Monitoring and Control systems for all the main European and Korean space programs. Since 1995, Clemessy Switzerland AG has provided a tremendous number of Special Check Out Equipment like solar array simulators, battery simulators, PCDU simulators, Pyro front ends or umbilical interfaces aimed to validate of scientific, earth observation, navigation and telecom platforms and payload subsystems.

CESI, established in 1956 and headquartered in Milan with premises also in Berlin, Mannheim, Dubai and Rio de Janeiro, is an independent, leading international center of excellence, providing Testing and Certification, Consulting, Engineering and Environmental services to the Energy Sector worldwide. CESI has also been involved since 30 years in the manufacturing of high efficiency multi junction solar cells based on III-V compounds for both space and terrestrial applications. We have invested in developing our own proprietary technology, we have been involved in the main space R&D programs at EU and international level and we have cooperated in many significant projects for interplanetary missions. CESI has reliably powered more than 60 satellites for over 25 different countries worldwide. Our triple junction cells for space applications have a typical efficiency of 30% and are qualified for both LEO and GEO satellites. Our high efficiency solar cells for HCPV terrestrial applications have demonstrated a typical 40% efficiency. In our continuous improvement effort we are already achieving effective results in four junction solar cells towards typical efficiencies beyond 35% for space and 45% for terrestrial HCPV.

Thales Alenia Space BELGIUM, wholly owned by Thales Alenia Space, started its space activities in 1963 and is an expert in several high-technology fields. Thales Alenia Space BELGIUM is the European front-runner in space electronics applications for satellites and launchers, a World leader in power conditioning and distribution for satellites and the principal supplier of electronics for Ariane 5. The company also produces the safeguard system for Ariane 6. Based in Charleroi and Leuven, Thales Alenia Space BELGIUM employs 600 staff.

Saft, the world’s leading designer and manufacturer of high-tech batteries for industry, has been a pioneer in specialized high performance, lightweight battery technology for space flight applications since 1966. The 17th of February 2016, Saft has celebrated the 50 Years of the first battery launch onboard Diapason 1 A. This vast depth of experience combined with the capability to offer all the space proven cell chemistries has seen over 30,000 Saft cells deployed on lander, launcher, space vehicle and satellite missions including Mars Explorer, Ariane, VEGA, ATV, Galileo IOV, Envisat, Metop, Meteosat, Spot, GPS and the large number of telecommunication satellites from Intelsat, Eutelsat, Inmarsat and SES.

In addition to advanced primary lithium cells, Saft has led the development of space-qualified rechargeable lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery systems that provide the ultimate in performance and reliability in a compact lightweight package ideally suited for GEO, LEO and MEO satellite platforms but also the LEO constellations such as OG2 and Iridium next. With 170 satellites powered with Li-ion Battery and launched till March 2016, Saft presents the largest satellite fleet in orbit. In addition, the Philae success has been definitively linked to the remarkable performance of the Saft Lithium primary battery.

Saft’s total service approach goes beyond the supply of custom-built batteries to include the design and development of complete systems engineered to withstand the demands of space flight throughout a long mission life.
